Meet the Encinitas Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.

Our Encinitas crew shows up in uniform, knows the difference between a coastal moisture problem and a desert heat crack, and treats your driveway like it’s their own. We’ve got four people handling calls, installs, and the repairs that can’t wait until morning. What ties us together is simple: nobody here wants to come back twice for the same issue. We get it done right the first time, or we make it right. That’s been the deal since 1984.

Our People

Carl Dutton, Owner

I started this company in 1984, back when Encinitas was mostly flower farms and beach cottages with manual garage doors you lifted with your own shoulder. Now we service everything from smart openers in Leucadia new-builds to original hardware on 1970s ranch homes in Olivenhain. I still answer the phone myself some nights, and I still drive out when a spring job goes sideways in a way that needs a second pair of eyes. Last month we had a custom Clopay door that measured fine in the shop but sat a quarter-inch off at the customer’s house. I was there at 7 a.m. the next morning with the senior installer, and we figured out the concrete slab had settled slightly on the north side. We adjusted, re-hung it, and the customer never saw a second invoice. That’s the work I like.

Marcus T., Lead Technician

Marcus has been with us eleven years and handles the jobs that make other techs scratch their heads. He’s factory-certified on LiftMaster, Genie, and Chamberlain openers, and he’s the one we send when a motor keeps throwing codes that don’t match the manual. He lives in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, so he knows exactly how the salt air off the 101 corrodes circuit boards faster than inland customers expect. His truck is organized with the kind of precision that saves twenty minutes per call, springs on the left wall, openers on the right, cables and hardware in labeled bins. Off the clock he’s building a wooden kayak in his garage, which he claims is almost done. He’s been claiming that for three years.

Elena R., Senior Installer

Elena joined us in 2019 after eight years doing commercial dock doors up in Los Angeles. She brought a rigging background that changed how we handle heavy custom doors, especially the solid wood Amarr models that weigh north of four hundred pounds. She trained as a journeyman under our K.E.Y.S. code and now runs her own install crew for full door replacements from Carlsbad to Rancho Santa Fe. Her specialty is tight spaces, garages where a standard install sequence won’t work because of a water heater or a low ceiling beam. She once fit a Wayne Dalton aluminum door into a converted 1920s carriage house in Leucadia with six inches of headroom to spare. In her own garage she keeps a 1967 Ford F-100 that she’s restoring, slowly, between surf trips.

Dave K., Service Coordinator

Dave is the live voice you get when you call (760) 565-5674 at 11 p.m. on a Sunday. He’s been with us six years, knows every technician’s strengths and current location, and can tell you whether your issue sounds like a broken spring, a stripped gear, or a safety sensor knocked out of alignment by a basketball. He schedules, dispatches, and follows up, and he’s the reason we can promise a real person instead of a phone tree. Dave grew up in Encinitas, graduated from San Dieguito Academy, and still surfs Swami’s when the dawn patrol crowd thins out. He keeps a whiteboard behind his desk with every open job, color-coded by urgency, and he updates it in real time while he’s on the phone.

Javier M., Apprentice Technician

Javier started with us in 2023, fresh from a trade program at MiraCosta College. He’s working toward his full journeyman certification under Marcus, and he’s already handling solo calls for tune-ups, roller replacements, and basic opener adjustments. His Spanish is fluent, which matters more than we expected, we’ve got a lot of Encinitas households where the homeowner prefers to discuss the work in their first language. Javier asks more questions than anyone on the team, which we encourage. Last month he caught a frayed cable on a routine maintenance call that the homeowner hadn’t noticed, and it would have snapped within the week. He lives with his parents in Vista for now, saving up, and he brings homemade tamales to the shop every December that we all fight over.

One Standard, Every Job

Every person on this crew works under the same written promise: the 90-Day Done Right Promise. If something we installed or repaired isn’t right, we come back. No paperwork to file, no dispute to navigate, no charge for the return trip. That promise travels with us across every city we serve, from Encinitas up through the thirteen communities in our network. Our trucks leave the shop stocked with springs, cables, openers, and hardware so most jobs finish in one visit. Our pricing is flat and stated before we start, so the number you agree to is the number on the bill. And every call, day or night, weekend or holiday, gets answered by a live person who actually works here. That’s the standard Carl set in 1984, and it’s the standard we still hold ourselves to.
